Things I hate, Saturday morning list
Self-righteous vegans. Blah, get over yourselves.
Food is such an important part of our lives that food choices and politics should never be forced upon anyone.
I do think that anyone who refers to themselves as a vegan but eats animal products in any way (fish, chicken- I was not aware they were vegtables.) is sadly misinformed. BUT, and this is the big but, people who eat texturized vegtable proteins, such as veggie burgers or chik strips- guess what- still vegan. There is no rule anywhere that says in order to be part of the vegan club, you’re only allowed to eat raw vegtables you grow yourself or get when you walk or bike (but never, ever drive!) to the farmer’s market. If there was a rule, then we’d have to make up a new term for people who don’t consume animal products (like awesomeos), and you’d find very few vegans.
My point is: vegans, stop hating. Unless you grew up vegan, eating nothing but what you scavenged from the woods, you probably have some comfort foods that are less then animal friendly crawling around in the back of your psyche. So if you have a humane way of getting that meal (tofuturkey, anyone?) more power to you. And beyond that, some of those TVP’s are just plain tasty and no one should feel guilty about them- especially considering you’re still eating vegan.
